Durable, easy to wash, nice variety of sizes.
Especially in these trying times, it’s nice to be able to just snatch up one of these babies from my bag and quickly shovel produce in rather than tracking down the flimsy plastic ones, fighting to open them, feeling the stab of guilt for creating more plastic waste (even though the average individual’s actions are nothing in the face of global climate disaster, it’s still comforting to “do our part”). You don’t need that kind of extra pressure when you’re already preoccupied wondering whether you could get away with washing this particular fruit with soap (banana peels should be washable, right? but god, it wasn’t your imagination, the apples your partner washed really did taste like soap even weeks later, and that can’t be good... perhaps you can quarantine the apples in a cabinet for a few days..?)
So I’m glad these came before the pandemic panic hit, but I’m also bummed because every grocery store trip since has been such a mad dash that I haven’t had the chance to really enjoy the look and feel of them, the casual superiority of using these fine bags at the health food store—standing with one draped casually over your fingers as you peruse the aisles, choosing only the finest brussels sprouts from the heap. But they’ve certainly been through the ringer, washed probably a dozen times (whether I used them or not, they all go in the wash these days), and they’ve held up like champs.
I only hope that someday, we’ll have our day in the sun.
